Bedding Basics

Perhaps you are just heading off to college or starting out on your own in your first apartment – it’s an exciting time but it can also be challenging – you need so many things just to get started and sometimes you’re not even sure what they are. Take bedding, for example. After the mattress and some pillows, what else is essential and what would be nice to have? Think about a shopping guide for bedspreads, quilts, comforters and sheets – the place to begin is with the size of your bed. Beds come in sizes ranging from twin and twin extra long, to full, queen, king and California King. Sheets are similarly sized and that’s important, especially if you’re heading off to college because you’ll need a variety of the extra long twin sheets in order to properly fit the bed in your dorm – it’s not like a conventional twin bed. But just when you think you’ve got it covered, blankets, quilts and comforters don’t come in extra long sizes – the twin will work just fine, so don’t go crazy looking for something you won’t be able to find. Another thing to know once you’ve figured out the correct size of your bed is that experts suggest three sets of bedding – one on the bed, one in the wash and one at the ready. It’s a good idea to select different types of sheet sets so you can manage climate and seasonal change; one cotton or jersey knit sheet set, one flannel sheet set and one set in sateen or another fabric choice will give you a lot of flexibility. Remember too that most sheet sets include pillowcases so once again, you need to know your sizes. There are standard and king pillows and pillowcases as well as European shams which fit the square pillows. So the basics include sheets, pillow cases and a quilt or comforter along with a mattress protector and a dust ruffle or bed skirt designed to hide what’s under the bed.
